I bought it for $40 from a young couple who had no idea how old it is - it came with their old farmhouse. It's 6 feet long, has a tight back, 3 cushions on the seat, and 4 legs across both front and back. I figured it was a long time since it was last upholstered - the seat cushions are pretty flat and as heavy as sacks of cement. When I sat down I could feel the frame cross-supports right through the cushions. I'm going to reupholster anyway, so I pulled up the deck fabric expecting to find broken springs. Instead I found, in order from top to bottom the deck fabric covering, a thin layer of batting, stuff that looks like giant size spanish moss, another piece of fabric, seems to be duck, and finally canvas-like webbing.

I'll be replacing the webbing, but I need advice what sort of 21st century stuff to use between the webbing and the foam cushions to replace the old-fashioned padding. (Does anybody know what that spanish moss type stuff is?)

Also, for the actual seat cushion, does a 6 inch thick piece of good seat foam wrapped in Dacron covered batting sound OK?

This is my first re-upholstery project, but the lines of the couch are very straight and should be fairly easy to deal with.

Thanks.

Szmarie

twine & attaching springs to webbing & topping (08 Nov 2009 23:35:21)

Hi,
I took apart our sofa and put it back together with no problem, but it didn't have springs in it. Now I'm doing my sister's sofa (3 part sectional) which has springs coming out the bottom every which way. I have lots of hemp twine which is fairly thick. Can I use that to tie the springs with or do I need to purchase something specifically made for springs ($$$ -- ?)?
Once I pull everything apart, my first step is to stretch the jute webbing and weave it across the bottom. Then I must need to sew the springs each one in place or tie them to the jute somehow. Not sure about this step. I think the hemp twine I have may be too thick to use for this and I'm not sure what to use.
Then I found instructions for tying the springs together using 8 knots on each one. I think I can follow that. I would like to use the hemp twine for this since I already have it (it is somewhere between 1/4 and 3/8 inches in diameter).
I'm thinking to use the same string for the welting although it is a bit tougher and not as soft as what was on there before (what was on there before was very soft; however, on the sofa at home, the piping was like a plastic covered with a thin layer of some kind of interfacing and was more stiff and firm than the hemp twine is). This twine is not rough; but is smooth so I think it will be fine for the piping.
After I tie the springs, then I need to cover them with some kind of interfacing or batting. Currently, there is a mat of batting which has been sewn so it is all tight. Then there is the outside fabric and the cushions sit on top of that.
So to summarize: I need to know how to attach the springs to the jute webbing and I need to know if I can use hemp twine to tie the springs. Also, I would like some suggestions for what to put over the springs -- between the springs and the outside fabric.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Double piping (08 Nov 2009 23:04:55)

There are 1 replies, with the last one on 08 Nov 2009 at 23:04:55 by FranetteRoschuni

PIPING FOOT DILEMMA (08 Nov 2009 23:00:25)

There are 1 replies, with the last one on 08 Nov 2009 at 23:00:25 by FranetteRoschuni

upholstery classes in northern NJ (07 Oct 2009 20:09:03)

There are 2 replies, with the last one on 07 Oct 2009 at 20:09:03 by De Moores

please help - can't find material (29 Jun 2009 01:56:08)

There are 1 replies, with the last one on 29 Jun 2009 at 01:56:08 by evelyn

Stomps-Burkhardt rocker (30 May 2009 06:04:43)

There are 1 replies, with the last one on 30 May 2009 at 06:04:43 by upholstery01

Fibre stuffings in the USA?
