I am a new member and require a little help in locating Marshall Springs. City and Guilds require me to produce a sample cushion with marshall springs, and I am having a problem locating these. Hope someone can be of help Thanks in advance. Phyl.

| Hmm, Marshall springs, never heard of them (other than the spa resort in Mexico)when I made my sprung cushion for C&G I used 4" very soft cone springs and sewed them into pockets before covering them, hope that helps. |

| Hi i've only just finished my city & guilds diploma, and when i made my sprung cushion i used the same springs as jean. I'm also in Wiltshire, what college are you studing at as my college has stopped running the city & guilds. So it would be nice to know where they are still being taught. |

Marshall Springs? wasn't he the deputy sheriff who helped catch Butch Cassidy? Or was it the follow up to the catalogue Marshall Ward?
Sorry - I'm not being very helpful really - I just love playing with words and the various meanings you can make from them

Hi Phyllis,
When I made my sample sprung cushion I used light weight springs that my teacher had saved from an old 1930's/40's sprung seat cushion.
I haven't heard of Marshall springs either, so I would speak with your teacher and get her/him to explain.
Good luck with the cushion.

Hi Phyllis,
”Marshall springs” are springs, which are sewed into pockets and can be joined up to make a spring unit use in bedding and cushions. The name is used a lot in the USA.

oh well done Franco - give that man a gold star! so having looked at the photos of a marshall spring unit ( and no Sue D thats not an metaphor!)we were quite right in using a soft cone springs

Hi, Jean and Sue you ar'nt going to let me live that down are you.
A quick question for Franco have you used the company you mentioned and if so do they ship to the uk.
Does anyone know of a good book on Caning, as i've been given a set of Regency dining chairs they were upholstered but would have been caned originaly and i would like to restore them to their former glory. |

Ruth and David touch on caning in their book but any book by Margery Brown is well worth buying. Quite old fashioned but very detailed and very clear, probably will have to be amazon though to buy it. A very good website and extremely helpful folk is www.formerglory.co.uk, they will sell you the exact amount you need for your chair rather than having to buy enough to cane the street, so to speak. they will also sell you instruction sheets for a pound
