Ruth and I have decided to hold an upholstery competition.
The competition is open to oldsofas forum members only. It is easy and free to enter all you have to do is: 1) send a photograph showing the project before you do any work on it, 2) another one showing the project at the point at which you finish stripping it ready to reupholster, and finally 3) three pictures of the finished project taken from 3 different view points.
You can email the pictures to david@oldsofas.com or mail them to oldsofas Upholstery Competition, unit 9 Glanaman Workshops, Tabernacle Road, Glanaman, Carmarthenshire SA18 2YB.
Please note: Entries will be posted on our website for all members to see. So take good clear photos.
You've got 3 months - entries must be in by 23rd December 2006 and we'll anounce the winners on the forum on Boxing Day.
There are two categories: A) Simple Seat and B) Open. Members can submit a maximum of two entries - one in each category.
Simple Seat is for simple chairs and stools with an unbuttoned upholstered seat including: drop-in-bottom chairs, pin cushion, overstuffed, stools of any description, and upholstered seat chairs with a back pad.
Open is for everything else - sofas, armchairs, chaise, nursing chairs, and stools and simple seat chairs that have deep buttoning.
Me and Ruth are the judges and we will judge entries on their upholstery, fabric and furniture - the quality of the upholstery is of prime importance of course, but use of apropriate/interesting fabric will score and also the selection of an interesting piece to upholster.
We will award one Gold and one Silver medal for each category. The Gold medal winners will recieve a certificate, signed copy of Complete Step by Step Upholstery, a pair of Osborne webbing pliers and a pair of Wiss shears. The Silver medal winners will recieve a certificate and signed copy of Complete Step byStep Upholstery.
Use this post for queries.
Good luck and get upholstering.
D & R

Brilliant idea! Does it have to be something we are currently working on or can it be something we finished this year but maybe 3 months ago? Jean |

OOh - I wish I'd known about this a week ago I'm in the middle of a chaise longue. And the fabric I'm planning is a gorgeous gold patterned silk. I have photos that I have at the beginning and I could take some now half-way through - but don't have the 'stripped ones' Oh well - I'll think of something else. How exciting - a competition!! Like being at school again - come on everyone- let's make it really competitive - we can encourage each other but have the hint of 'arrogance' needed to win.
I'll set the challenge - come on everyone - if you think you're good enough!! Take me on!!! |

Dear all - I regularly check out the forum - and love the banter between Jean, Sue et al and always feel quite humbled by the depth of knowledge out there.
I've been going to adult education classes for close to 2 years now and have only managed to finish 1 item - a stool! I do however have a couple of victorian chairs on the go (a gents and a ladies chair) and chaise (my father in law made the frame for me). I've got the ladies chair to calico (still trying to find the 'right' top fabric) and will have the gents chair to the same stage within 2 weeks (the classes are starting again). I'm currently (sic) back stuffing the chaise!
I guess this competition is just the impetus I need to crack on and finish something!
David/Ruth - the book is excellent! I presume the pics should relate to the same piece!!??
Good luck all, with a bit of luck my 2.5 year old son and slightly older husband will allow me to go hide in the garage for several evenings! |

| The pictures do have to relate to the same piece. The reason for the pictures is so we can see what it looked like before - and therefore judge how much better it is after - and to see how much of the old upholstery you strip off to see the point you start upholstering from. |
