Ruth and I started this forum as an additional element to our upholstery business oldsofas. Oldsofas is no more and it would be wrong to just close the forum now it has become a thing in its own right. However, contrary to initial thoughts Ruth and I want to bury oldsofas once and for all and that includes handing this forum over to someone else. That someone else can be one person or several people. But I think it right that all members should have a say and decide what to do.

1. The forum costs $4.99 per month which is paid out of my Paypal account so we need a volunteer to pay that.

2. We need an administrator(s) to accept emailed photographs from members, reduce them in size and resolution (believe me the photos I get are HUUUUUGE!) post them up in cyberspace and put a link in the relevant post so that the pictures show.

3. You need to decide on a new name - oldsofas is dead and should be buried.

Ok lets hear from you - volunteers please. Hands up who knows their way around HTML.

David and Ruth . . . I was very saddened to read this today, although I completely understand. You have been amazing to all of us who have participated in this forum. Certainly, you have inspired us to keep going on projects we might never have, but also taught us to enjoy what we love. You defnitely have made a difference in my work!

I would love to offer to continue this forum, but as I am not the brightest bulb on the technology tree, doubtful that I could manage it. I also see that I am pretty much the only one who is responding to posts these days. Sad as it is, perhaps it has reached its limit.

Hopefully, others will respond. Is there a deadline by which you plan to take the site down? If this happens, perhaps those of us who have participated can figure out a way to keep in touch and continue to help one another.

Sadly,

Lorre

This is quite sad indeed! I have been completely manic lately, and so have neglected my project... but on dragging out my supplies today with renewed enthusiasm, I thought I should check up on everyone here.

It HAS been quiet! I was worried before that I was getting TOO chatty (boring)!?!?! But maybe it's that personal element that keeps people checking in more frequently??

In any case, the future here is bleak, I daresay. I really would offer to run the thing if I had the brainpower!! I would suggest that if someone were to take it on, we could all issist by taking turns paying the £4.99 monthly cost. Or perhaps new members could be asked to pay that amount upon joining? The help and advice to be gained here is certainly well worth it... priceless, really.

I agree with Lorre, maybe we can swap e-mail addresses, at the very least, and copy in everyone who wants to participate. It's not too tricky attaching a photo to an e-mail, and replies could be copied back to everyone in the circle.

Would it work? Ideas please, people, while we're all still here!!!!!!! : )

Thanks
Laura

I think the time has come for you all to join the other upholstery forum, rather than try to run this one unless someone knows how to do it.

To Monty and John Turner . . . Quite frankly, I have no interest in joining a forum that said such negative things about David and Ruth. It was so petty, given what they have given in terms of their time and knowledge here. And over what? A contest? Please!

Obviously, we are all entitled to our opinions, but I have been on this forum since its inception; and it has been great. Sad as I am that it may come to an end, I have no interest in joining a forum started by such negativity. Perhaps those of us who have stayed here and all those who have contintued to join, did so for a reason. But being a realist, I recognize that with the seemingly imminent close of this site, that may now change for some, but not for me. I would much prefer to swap e-mail addresses with those regulars, who have continued on here. They are a much more positive group.

Monty, you've made 2 contributions to this forum - 2nd January the day you joined and now this one - neither have added anything to the topic of upholstery - they've simply been to negative this forum. So why do you bother? This topic is about democracy and the future of this forum and as you've contributed nothing except negativity I suggest, as i did in response to your other post that you have a full refund and leave. For the record anyone can join the Association Of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers, no exams, no testimonials from satisfied customers, no committee of the great and the good from the world of upholstery and curtains picking over you're finest work - no - all you have to do is pay a yearly subscription fee, they'd even let you join!

John, if I were a hobbyist upholsterer I'd rather beat my balls with a bat than join Sue Dixon/Monty's forum - tugid is an understatement. "Hi my name is Daisy and I do upholstery. Ooh this is so exciting a new upholstery forum." And then you never hear from them again - what help is that to anyone? This forum has a bit of history behind it, and more than 10 members. If you genuinely want to find the answer to an upholstery question then you may not find it here, but there's absolutely no point whatsoever looking for it there - the only person who knows anything about upholstery is Franco and he's been contributing more to this forum than that one in the past few weeks! If noone else wants to take over the forum I'll continue to do it - this topic is to discuss someone else taking over and for a democratic exchange off views between members who contribute something to this forum not for snipers, who contribute nothing except bile, to loose off a few shots.

For the avoidance of doubt this forum costs $4.99 (US Dollars) a month - about £3.

Just out of curiosity today, I took a look at Sue Dixon's upholstery forum and was somewhat stunned by what I read. This was a post she had made to a topic on Old Sofas that she had started:

Posted: Mon Apr 02, 2007 5:49 am Post subject: When will old Sofas die?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you want a good chuckle go and have a read of the Old Sofas forum - it's hilarious.
John Turner and Monty -- you had the audacity to suggest folk from there might come and join us here - shame on you!!!
If someone can give me a definition of democracy and a 'lack of negativity'- I'm listening.
What a tos......? Fill in as appropriate!
Answers on a postcard please
Hee hee
Wonder when it dies officially?

All I can say is, "Shame on you, Sue Dixon!" So David and Ruth . . . In the interest of all the good people here, I will be happy to volunteer to pay for the cost of the forum for the next six months. I think that should give everyone enough time to determine whether they want it to continue. If anyone wants to join Sue Dixon, they are welcome to do so, although I cannot imagine why given that it is filled with such petty meanness.

So let me know what else I need to do, i.e., how to be an administrator, etc., etc., and I will just try to figure it out.

I may be stupid but what is the reason for all of the nasty comments, flying backwards and forwards across the E-waves, i do not understand why Sue has a problem with David, but this childlike behaviour does not help either forum. I say stick with what the forums were set up to do which was to be a source of help and information, not a place to slag off other people. This sort of thing does not encourage new people to get involved, and will put off some members.
Well thats my rant over and done with, sorry i have not had much time of late to get involved, too much work not enough time.
I do wish both David and Ruth good luck with their new adventures, i also understand, after reading some comments why David, would want out.

David how is the weight loss going, i am pleased to say i've lost another 9lbs since Jan

You're not stupid, Claire. I never understood all the drama, either. Hopefully, it is over and everyone can move on and get back to helping one another on their projects. I've paid the costs of the forum for the next six months, which will be an indication of whether it will continue. As there has been little participation in the last few weeks, it may be doubtful. But forever the optimist, I am hopeful.

Congratulations on the weight loss! Any loss, I know, is hard work!

Hi Lorre

Thank you! I know I've been quiet, but at the moment I'm up to my eyes with life!!!! Will get back to the chaise before the end of month - so I'll probably start posting again. I really hope we can keep this going, it's a great resource and sanity saver (for the most part!). Thanks once again. P

Hi, Paula! What do you mean you have a life outside of upholstery! :) Good to hear from you and I am sure your chaise will be happy to be worked on again. Hopefully, I will be able to wrap my head around how to post the photos. Unfortunately, I am not the brightest bulb on the technology tree!

Hi Folks.
Lorre, I think it's great you're willing to try this thing. I agree that I want to stick to this forum, I like the people here! And like Paula, I 've been chaotic these past few months, but my chairs are talikng to me lately, and I will definitely be looking for everyone's support and advice.
If we keep this going I will send money, too.
Hang in there, people!! :)

Hi, Laura . . . I will give it my best shot. But as there has not been much participation of late, I'm not sure how long this will continue. So I simply take it a day at a time and hope for the best. Good luck with your chairs! I have been wrestling with a few myself, so have been busy.
