I have recently finished two Victorian button back chairs. The plain one is the second of a pair of ladies & gentlemen chairs. It was quite a struggle getting the back full enough to be nice and rounded once the buttoning was in place. In the end I did a large roll (with a stitched edge to get it nice and solid) around the edge and lumbar and then stuffed (and stuffed) the centre - just as it says in all the books - and then stitched hessian over this. This meant that I could see better where to put the buttons. It took a little longer but the result I think is better. (Maybe in ten years I'll be able to take the shorter route!) The smaller one is an iron frame chair. This is the first iron frame I've tackled so it was full of new challenges and endless stitching of layers to former layers! In addition the fabric has a very visible "line" in the pattern so getting the buttons straight was tricky. I've yet to deliver them to their owners but I'm pleased with them - and hope they will be too!
