Hello,
I'm brand new to this site and to the upholstery world. My sister takes an upholstery class in Los Angeles, CA. I just got back and saw some of her amazing work.
I would love to take an upholstery class in my area. None of the adult schools or community colleges seem to offer these classes.
Does anyone know where I might begin to look for instruction? I'm a "hands on" type of person, so I don't think that the DVDs and books are right for me. I'm in Essex County, NJ.
Thanks, Rocki

Hi, Rocki,
I can't help with classes in NJ (but I hope you have found one). I too would have liked to attend classes before getting started, but it was not possible, so I had to use a book. This is just to assure you that you can actually get quite far with a book, at least for things that are not too complicated, so don't give up if there are no classes. The book I started with is a short one called 'Upholstery Properly Explained' by Anne Brock (ISBN 9780716006732) which gives very clear instructions.
This reply is really just to let you know that there is somebody out there!
Best wishes, Sandra |

Hi Rocki64,
How about YouTube? I have seen numerous videos and ideas online. They all seem to be very helpful.
Upholstery can be very tricky. And I understand what you mean when you say "hands on" as it really is the best way to learn. Alternatively, you could try and volunteer or ask at a local re upholsterer. If you can find someone with enough patience to teach you, you can secure some wonderful hands on experience.
Let me know what you found.
